On the 26th of September 2024, the University of North Bengal celebrated the 204th birth anniversary of Pandit Ishar Chandra Vidyasagar, a legendary figure in Indian education and social reform, with a special lecture. The event took place at the University Library at 3 PM, bringing together almost 100 research scholars, students, officers, and faculty members to honor the legacy of one of India’s most revered educators and reformers. The program commenced with a warm welcome from the Librarian, who also conducted the proceedings. The Chief Guest of the event, Prof. Manjula Bera, graced the occasion with her presence, and Prof. Debabrata Debnath, Director of IQAC, University of Gour Bangal, delivered the keynote lecture, shedding light on Vidyasagar’s invaluable contributions to education, women’s rights, and social reform. Prof. Debnath, took the audience through the life and work of Pandit Ishar Chandra Vidyasagar, emphasizing his role as a pioneer in introducing educational reforms in Bengal during the 19th century. He highlighted Vidyasagar’s relentless efforts in advocating for women's education and widow remarriage, noting his profound influence in shaping modern India’s educational landscape. The speaker also touched upon Vidyasagar’s literary contributions, which continue to inspire generations. Prof. Manjula Bera, in her address as the Chief Guest, reiterated the importance of carrying forward Vidyasagar's legacy in today's educational framework.
